Digital Interconnects - an introduction

Coaxial cable is the preferred option for connecting 'transport' to DAC; or between DVD player and digital amp/receiver for AC3/DTS signal transmission- and using S/PDIF-the 75-ohm Sony and Philips Digital Interphase Format.

We offer the choice of three high quality, multi award-winning digital interconnects -different prices to suit your budget yet ensuring that whichever one you choose it will maximise the potential of your system whether they be less expensive hi-fi/home cinema set ups, mid-fi, or reference standard systems

At audiophile-reference level you may encounter the AES/EBU interface, which uses symmetrical connections with transformer isolation and an output impedance of 110 ohm. more...

The signal-level of this interface is reasonably higher than in S/PDIF. Because AES/EBU digital audio signals are transmitted at high, video-like frequencies (at around 6MHz) they require very precise construction and termination. At Ecosse we offer the finest AES/EBU digital cable on the market today - our all-Monocrystal™ Silver individually wound and hand-made 'In the Beginning' Interconnect! If you require the ULTIMATE digital cable-for goodness sake as us as we don't keep this cable in stock-every single one is wound to order.

Alternatively, for convenience, use our high-performance fibre optic cables-'Superior-grade' or better 'Deluxe' terminated with Toshiba link (hence 'Tos' link) connections or 3.5 mini optical jack (often MiniDisc). Here, the transmission media is 1 mm plastic fibre and the signals are transmitted using visible light (red transmitting LED). The optical signals have exactly the same format as the electrical S/PDIF signals, they are just converted to light signals (light on/off).

With digital cables, there are three things that are paramount: proper impedance, proper cable termination, and wide bandwidth. If the connector is NOT a perfect 75-ohm, 110 ohm, or whatever, it will cause minor reflections in the cable, which results in 'jitter'.

We cannot stress enough that significant improvements are possible from matching loudSpeaker and interconnect cable-grade-wise (see our 'at-a-glance' grading table) throughout your system, thus enhancing synergy.

Remember, we're a purely handcrafting outfit. Unlike the big boys, the vast majority of our cables are handcrafted right here, in Scotland. It's why we keep things small. It affords us the necessary attention to detail, and it's what we enjoy doing. At Ecosse Reference Cables we offer a 'custom-made' cable service, and will tailor-make cables to suit our customer's every need, even those that cannot be met through our standard ranges. Order here.
